The Croatian Soccer Federation of Australia and New Zealand (CSFANZ) was formed way back in 1974 with the aim of inaugurating and co-ordinating the annual Australian-Croatian Soccer Tournament. The first event, a trial tournament, was staged in 1974 in Melbourne, with only six soccer clubs participating at Melbourne Croatia's ground in Essendon. The first official tournament was held a year later in 1975 and was hosted by Sydney United. Former National Soccer League clubs Melbourne Knights and Sydney United as well as state league sides Adelaide Raiders, St. Albans Dinamo, Canberra Deakin (Canberra FC) and Western Knights (Perth) have entered teams in tournament competition. In 2006, the 32nd tournament was held in Sydney. (The winners of the men's competition was Sydney United, while the winners of the women's competition was Canberra Deakin who won 3-0. The 2007 edition held in Perth, Western Australia for the first time in decades, was one of the greatest in Australian-Croatian Soccer Tournament history. A record amount of teams saw Sydney's Ljubuski FC take out the tournament defeating Fremantle Croatia in the final 1-0, while tournament debutantes, North Fremantle Croatian Club took out the women's section, annihilating reigning champs Canberra Croatia (Canberra FC) in the decider. The 2008 event, to be held in the Victorian city of Geelong on the first weekend of October, is once again expected to attract a record crowd. For the first time in tournament history, teams in the Men's competition will be divided into two divisions – according to a seeding system devised by the CSFANZ, based on official Football Federation Australia league (competition) rankings. |
